Two recent examples show how this technology is adapting to the demands for color, quality, and material variety.
On one hand, the Viennese studio Sheyn has demonstrated that it's possible to create decorative objects with an impeccable finish using FDM printers and PLA filament. On the other, the manufacturer Flashforge has launched the Creator 5 series, which promises to revolutionize multi-color printing without generating waste. Both proposals share the use of FDM technology, but with different approaches that enrich the ecosystem.
Color as the protagonist
Multicolor printing has been one of the biggest challenges of additive manufacturing. Flashforge has integrated four independent extruders that allow combining up to 32 true colors without the need for purge towers, thus reducing material waste. Sheyn, on the other hand, has opted for a different approach: its Blend Edition collection offers unique color gradients, achieved by combining filaments of different shades. Both solutions demonstrate that color is no longer an obstacle in home 3D printing.
Materials and applications
The range of materials available for FDM has expanded considerably. Sheyn exclusively uses PLA, a biodegradable material obtained from renewable resources, ideal for decorative objects. Flashforge, on the other hand, offers compatibility with engineering materials such as carbon fiber, flexible polyurethane, and polycarbonate, opening the door to more technical applications. The combination of rigid and flexible materials in a single part is possible thanks to the Creator 5's multi-material system.
