The technology for detecting metals is already well known. However, not all of us have the possibility of being able to have a metal detector at home to help us with tasks such as locating a piece of metal that we have lost or simply as a tool to discover small treasures.
A maker user has managed to create a metal detector thanks to an Arduino Mega board. The user is called TechKiwi Gadgets and has published the construction guide in the Instructables repository.
For the construction of this metal detector you will need several electromagnets, a 3,5 inch touch screen, an Arduino Mega board and various components that we can find in electronics stores. The use of these coils makes the objects are located more precisely and the touch screen makes it possible to locate the exact coordinate of the metallic object.
This homemade metal detector cannot be used in all the places we want
The design uses five coils to detect any metallic object. It's a design that creates a powerful and portable metal detector for very little money. What's surprising is the use of an Arduino Mega board . While the Arduino Mega is the most powerful model in the Arduino Project, it's also the one with the fewest uses.
Currently, the Arduino Mega is commonly used for building 3D printers and some virtual reality projects . And now we can add this metal detector as another project that utilizes the Arduino Mega.
Building this project is quite easy, and the guide even includes a method for calibrating the device to make it more accurate. If you build this metal detector, remember that its use is restricted in Spain , and in certain areas, you may not be able to use it without the appropriate permit, or even with one.
