Drones could be key to the development of precision olive cultivation

precision olive cultivation

Without a doubt, one of the most important crops in Andalusia is the olive sector, which explains the many interests involved in developing this type of cultivation using the latest techniques available on the market. This time, we'll be discussing a project being carried out at the University of Huelva related to precision olive cultivation using drones.

This project, known as TecnOlivo, is part of the European Union's framework for 'Technologies for the management and supervision of olive cultivation' and thanks to this framework, the project has been provided with funding of 2,504,708.41 euros.

Thanks to the precision cultivation of the olive tree, it is expected to generate new business opportunities and quality employment in Andalusia

To carry out this project, not only will a team of researchers from the University of Huelva, led by Professor José Manuel Andújar , work on it, but collaborators of the caliber of the National Institute of Aerospace Technology, the Andalusian Cooperative Society Nuestra Señora de la Oliva, the National Institute of Agricultural and Veterinary Research, Ubiwhere Lda. and MURTIGAO – Sociedade Agrícula, SA have also joined, the latter three institutions being based in Portugal.

Thanks to the collaborative work of these institutions, it is hoped that a marketable technological solution will be developed that is easy for any farmer to use, enabling comprehensive, ecological and optimized management of olive groves through non-invasive monitoring of relevant agronomic parameters.

Without a doubt, and thanks to this project, it will be possible, or at least that is the expectation of all contributors to the cause, to create added value to the olive sector in practically all of Andalusia, while also promoting the transfer of technology developed by the University of Huelva itself, seeking above all to generate greater business opportunities and quality employment.
