The US multinational has confirmed a new capital injection into its manufacturing facility in Leixlip, west of Dublin. The investment amounts to €5.000 billion and its main objective is to increase semiconductor production capacity in Europe, in a context of growing demand driven by artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.
The plan, which began earlier this year, involves modernizing existing facilities and installing state-of-the-art equipment. Intel anticipates that this expansion will create new full-time, high-tech jobs , although the company has not provided a specific number of hires.
A multi-million dollar investment for chip production
The investment will be used to expand production of Intel Xeon 6 and next-generation Intel Xeon processors, which will be manufactured on the Intel Node 3. These chips are essential for powering data centers and AI platforms that require high-volume processing. The company will also leverage existing cleanrooms on campus to accelerate the deployment of the new capacity.
Among the planned improvements, the expansion of the automated conveyor system connecting the plant's various modules stands out. This system will allow all production phases to be integrated into a single high-speed environment , optimizing workflows and reducing manufacturing times.
Focus on Xeon processors and AI
Artificial intelligence is driving a surge in demand for advanced silicon. Chip manufacturers are racing to secure production capacity to meet the needs of large language models and high-performance computing applications. Intel is reinforcing its commitment to the server segment with the Xeon family , which forms the backbone of many data centers worldwide.
Intel Foundry's Executive Vice President, Naga Chandrasekaran, stated that the investment not only increases production of critical products but also ensures that Ireland remains at the forefront of the most advanced manufacturing ecosystems. The company emphasizes that the Leixlip plant is one of the most modern in its global network and that this new phase will solidify its position as a benchmark in Europe.
Impact on employment and Intel's presence in Ireland
The Leixlip campus currently employs around 4.900 people. With this investment, Intel hopes to expand its workforce with new technology profiles, although it has not specified the exact number. Since arriving in Ireland in 1989, the company has invested more than €30.000 billion in the country , making it one of the largest foreign investors in the Irish economy.
Most of that investment has been concentrated in recent years, with the plant's capacity doubling between 2019 and 2023. Ireland has become a strategic hub for semiconductor manufacturing in Europe , and this new injection reinforces that position.
Alignment with the European semiconductor strategy
Intel's investment aligns with the European Union's plans to reduce its reliance on Asia for chip production. Brussels has promoted the Chip Act, which aims to attract manufacturing and strengthen the local supply chain. The expansion of Leixlip helps ensure a regional supply of advanced processors for the new artificial intelligence infrastructure being deployed across the continent.
Intel has not announced plans to build a completely new plant, but rather to modernize existing facilities. This strategy allows for faster execution and more efficient use of resources , while maximizing the production capacity of the Irish campus.
With this new €5.000 billion investment, Intel is reinforcing its commitment to European semiconductor manufacturing, focusing on next-generation Xeon processors and the growing demand for artificial intelligence. The modernization of the Leixlip plant, which already employs nearly 5.000 people and has seen €30.000 billion invested since 1989, positions Ireland as a key pillar in the company's global strategy and in the European Union's technological sovereignty plans.
