Samsung has unveiled its new generation of foldable phones in London, one of the company's most ambitious projects in recent years. The Galaxy Z series expands for the first time to three models: the Galaxy Z Fold8, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip8. With this move, the Korean firm aims to cater to different user profiles and, at the same time, compete with the imminent arrival of the first foldable iPhone, which, according to rumors, could launch this fall. Samsung's strategy involves offering three distinct experiences within the same ecosystem, something it hasn't done before in this category.
The event, held on July 22nd, also served to unveil other devices such as smart glasses developed with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, but the main focus was on the phones. The new foldable phones come with improvements in battery, processor, and screen , and with a price increase of around €90 on average compared to the previous generation. In Spain, pre-orders are already open, and the first units will arrive in stores in the coming weeks.
Three models for three different profiles
The Galaxy Z Flip8 retains the clamshell design that has served Samsung so well. It's the most compact in the family, measuring just 6,1 mm thick when unfolded and weighing 180 grams. It's designed for those looking for a small and manageable phone without sacrificing a 6,9-inch main screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Its 4,1-inch external screen allows you to interact with notifications and apps without having to open the device.
The Galaxy Z Fold8, meanwhile, adopts a book-like format with a 7,6-inch inner screen and a 5,5-inch outer screen. It's geared towards content consumption and multitasking , and weighs just 201 grams, making it the lightest Fold ever from Samsung. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, this year's big new release, raises the bar with an 8-inch main screen, a thickness of only 4,1 mm when unfolded, and a weight of 215 grams. This model is designed for productivity and content creation , featuring a 200MP camera system and 8K video recording capabilities.
Silicon-carbon batteries: a leap in autonomy
One of the most significant new features of this generation is the change in battery technology. Samsung has abandoned lithium-ion batteries in the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra models in favor of silicon-carbon batteries, a material that offers greater energy density. The Fold8 Ultra boasts a 5.000 mAh capacity , compared to the 4.400 mAh of the Z Fold7, while the Fold8 reaches 4.800 mAh. All of this is achieved without increasing the thickness: the Fold8 Ultra measures 4,1 mm when unfolded, and the Fold8, 4,5 mm.
The Galaxy Z Flip8, on the other hand, retains the 4.300 mAh battery of its predecessor, but Samsung has taken advantage of the new technology to slim down the chassis: it goes from 6,5 mm to 6,1 mm. Fast charging also improves in the top-of-the-range models : the Fold8 Ultra supports 45W charging, while the Flip8 is limited to 25W. According to Samsung, the Fold8 Ultra can offer up to 27 hours of video playback on a single charge.
Processors and performance: Exynos vs Snapdragon
In terms of processors, Samsung has opted for a similar strategy to its flagship models. The Galaxy Z Flip8 uses the Exynos 2600, the same chip found in the Galaxy S26 and S26+. This processor offers more than enough performance for everyday use and improves energy efficiency compared to the previous generation's Exynos 2500. The Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra, on the other hand, incorporate Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the same one used in the Galaxy S26 Ultra. This difference reflects the intended use of each model : the Folds are designed for more demanding tasks, such as video editing or playing resource-intensive games.
Regarding memory, all models start with 12GB of RAM, although the Fold8 Ultra offers a 16GB configuration in its 1TB version. Internal storage ranges from 256GB to 1TB , depending on the variant. Samsung has confirmed that all devices will receive seven years of Android updates and security patches, making them a long-term investment.
Prices and availability in Spain
Prices for the new foldable phones have increased compared to 2025, something Samsung attributes to the rising cost of memory semiconductors. The Galaxy Z Flip8 starts at €1.299 for the 256GB version, while the 512GB model costs €1.499. The Galaxy Z Fold8 has a starting price of €1.999, and the Fold8 Ultra reaches €2.799 in its highest configuration. Despite the price increase, Samsung is confident it will maintain demand thanks to its ability to secure component supply and launch offers, such as the "deliver and go" campaign on its official store.
In Spain, all three models are now available for pre-order in colors such as Graphite, White, Lavender, and Pink, among others. The first deliveries are expected in early August , and major carriers and online retailers are anticipated to offer additional promotions. With this new range, Samsung is not only updating its foldable phone lineup but also setting the pace for a category that, according to market research firms, will grow by 20% by 2026.
Apple's entry into the foldable phone market, expected in September, adds pressure to a market Samsung has dominated since 2019. With three clearly differentiated models, the Korean company is trying to cover all bases before the foldable iPhone makes its big splash. Analysts predict Apple could capture up to 29% of global shipments in its first year, but Samsung is confident that its experience and AI ecosystem, with features like Now Brief and Gemini Intelligence, will make the difference.
